Achieving LGBT Equality Through Litigation, Legislation, Policy, and Public Education

Erik Olvera

Director of Communications

NCLR Director of Communications J. Erik Olvera is an award-winning journalist and a seasoned strategic marketing and communications specialist, with nearly two decades of experience. He cut his teeth as a minority affairs journalist for some of the country’s top print media companies, including McClatchy and MediaNews, where his work is best exemplified by his award-winning investigative narratives.

In 2003, he launched a marketing and communications consultancy, working specifically with nonprofit organizations, smaller businesses and Fortune 500s to help them improve their outreach to hard-to-reach minority populations, with an emphasis on engaging Latino, African-American, Asian and LGBT communities.

Olvera closed his consultancy to devote his marketing and communications efforts to advancing LGBT equality. Prior to joining NCLR, he led the marketing and communications initiatives for Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, the largest national nonprofit devoted exclusively to LGBT workplace equality. While there, he focused on rebranding the organization’s identity, and furthering the organization’s reach beyond its core constituency through strategic marcom campaigns.

Olvera, a Regis University alumnus, is a longtime supporter of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, where he volunteers as a training ride leader for the AIDS LifeCycle fund raising cycling event and also raises much needed funds as a rider. He resides in the Bay Area with his partner, Jeff Pittelkau, an online advertising executive.
