Achieving LGBTQ Equality Through Litigation, Legislation, Policy, and Public Education for 40 Years

Sam Lai

Legal Assistant

Sam joined NCLR as a legal assistant in October 2015. Their involvement in the LGBTQIA+ community began during their time as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, where they earned a Bachelor of Arts in Asian American & Asian Diaspora Studies with a minor in Education.

Sam’s passion for social justice guides them to learn more about intersectionality, transformative justice, and queer and transgender liberation. On weekends, Sam can be found at Eastwind Books of Berkeley, a bookstore founded in 1982 and owned by longtime activists Bea and Harvey Dong.

Favorite quote: “Seeing our experiences, seeing ourselves, and seeing each other is apart of the transformation; otherwise, we will be left to our media releases, phone calls and emails, and never ending meetings with a sense of urgency that disallows us from being truly present for when transformation comes because transformation calls for affirmations of our whole selves; we are not our wounds but we have them, we are not our hurt but we are and when we can support each other and ourselves in saying that the wound and hurt exists and that we in fact then did start community building to escape those feelings, we are that much closer to healing.” Ngọc Loan Trần
