Legislation/Policy: Combatting Anti-LGBT Bias in Sports

STATUS: Ongoing, National

NCLR’s Sports Project regularly advocates for and assists transgender athletes across the country. NCLR co-founded and participates in a coalition of LGBT sports leaders from across the country that works to combat anti-LGBT bias in sports. The coalition brings together college and professional athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, political figures, LGBT advocates and sports organizations to examine best practices, troubleshoot common problems, and develop strategies to tackles anti-LGBT bias at every competition level. NCLR also works one-on-one with transgender athletes. When a California community college argued that a transgender male swimmer would violate indecent exposure laws if he exposed his post-surgery male chest during meets, NCLR successfully intervened. The school reversed its position and confirmed the athlete’s right to swim in male swimsuits. NCLR also assisted Kye Alums, the first transgender male athlete to play Division I college basketball.
