Help Protect the Rights of Married Same-Sex Couples in California
Dear Friend of NCLR,
When Proposition 8 passed and eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry in California, it also created confusion about the rights of same-sex couples in California who married in other states.
While we work to repeal Proposition 8 in the future, right now we can do something to help these couples, and strengthen the fight for marriage equality.
Help clarify and protect the rights of couples who married in other states and now live in California: Call your state senators and Governor Schwarzenegger now!
The Marriage Recognition and Family Protection Act, SB 54, authored by Senator Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) and sponsored by our colleagues at Equality California, will affirm that couples who married outside the state prior to the passage of Prop. 8 are still married—and that those who marry out-of-state in the future won’t be treated as complete legal strangers in California.
The bill is squarely in line with the California Supreme Court’s rulings. Yet anti-equality forces are already hard at work attacking this fair-minded measure. They are trying to defeat this bill in order to continue their opposition to the legitimacy of same-sex relationships and to promote state-sponsored anti-LGBT discrimination.
Call your legislators and ask them to support SB 54. Then, call the Governor and ask him to do the same.
Until we achieve full equality, NCLR will continue to work to rectify the legal morass that Prop. 8 created and to ensure all couples can access vital legal protections for their families.
Please take action now to stop Prop 8 from further hurting LGBT families and same-sex couples and to help clarify the law regarding married same-sex couples.
