Equal Access to Legal Services For All— Call Congress Today
Dear Friend of NCLR,
Given our tough economic times, our community’s most vulnerable need affordable or free legal aid more than ever. Legal aid provides services to low-income members of our community, and Legal Services Corp (LSC), the nation’s single largest provider of legal aid to low-income people, is here to help. LSC receives all of its funding from Congress and currently, it is facing obstacles in its ability to fully provide access to justice to everyone in need.
President Barack Obama has called on Congress to increase LSC's funding and to lift costly and ineffective restrictions on its ability to provide legal aid to the poor. Congress needs to hear from you too. Please call Congress at (202) 224-3121 today and let them know how they can better promote justice.
Tell Congress to adopt the Senate’s repeal of LSC restrictions on non-federal funds, which enables legal aid providers to receive outside funding, including private donations and funding from state and local government, into the final bill.
Urge Congress to adopt the House’s proposed repeal of the restrictions that prohibit legal aid providers from claiming attorney fees that can be used to supplement the LSC’s budget and help others gain access to legal assistance.
Let Congress know that recipients of legal aid should be able to participate in class action lawsuits, along with others who have been victimized by predatory lending and consumer fraud.
With your help, we can make sure that everyone has equal access to the legal help they need.
