Every student deserves to be safe at school. But far too often, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students must run a gauntlet of daily abuse and harassment every time they walk through school doors. The damage caused by this type of bullying is serious and lasting. Even more disturbing, the adults who should protect these students often fail to do so.
NCLR is committed to ending this harm and ensuring that LGBT youth are respected, protected, and included in our nation’s public schools. Earlier this year, we filed two lawsuits against Minnesota’s Anoka-Hennepin School District on behalf of six students who have experienced continuing harassment and discrimination. We are asking the school district to take serious action to address the bullying and harassment LGBT students are regularly facing. The lawsuits are underway, and now it’s time for you to take action.
Will you support the students of the Anoka-Hennepin School District by signing onto this open letter letting them know that you have their backs? We’ll hand deliver the letter with your signature to our clients in the case against the school district. Because of the amazing generosity to those who have already signed, we raised enough money to place an ad featuring the letter in the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper on Tuesday, September 6th, 2011—the first day of school.
Thanks for standing up for the young people of the Anoka-Hennepin School District—especially now when they need it the most.
