NCLR Applauds California Governor Signing State Dream Act into Law

Statement by NCLR Executive Director Kate Kendell, Esq.

(San Francisco, CA, October 11, 2011)—On Saturday, October 8, 2011, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed the state’s Dream Act into law, eliminating discrimination against undocumented students who graduate from high schools and are on a path toward citizenship, who will now be able to apply to the state’s public universities as residents. The new law grants equal access to in-state tuition and allows students access to both private loans and public aid to help pay for their education.

The law goes into effect in January 2013.

Statement by NCLR Executive Director Kate Kendell, Esq.:

"Every student deserves equal access to higher education and the opportunity to be successful, and we applaud Governor Brown for supporting the key values of humanity and decency and for his leadership and investment in the future prosperity of California."
