A Statement from NCLR Executive Director Kate Kendell, Esq.
(San Francisco, CA, October 1, 2007)
Dear Friend of NCLR,
I really need you now. Please read this and act. It will only take a few minutes but it WILL make a difference. After years of tireless work, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is up for a vote by the United States House of Representatives’ Labor and Education Committee. Members of Congress have approved a version of ENDA that does not include gender identity. Representative Barney Frank has approved a version of ENDA that does not include gender identity. If you live in Northern California, you can act today to urge Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Representative George Miller to keep both sexual orientation and gender identity in the bill.
If you are in San Francisco, join us TODAY, Monday, October 1st, for a 24 hour vigil in front the Federal Building, where Speaker Pelosi’s office is located: 450 Golden Gate Street at Polk Street.
Activists started gathering at 8:00 this morning.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi can be reached at her Washington, D.C. office: 202.225.4965 and her San Francisco District office: 415.556.4862.
Representative George Miller can be reached at his Washington, D.C. office: 202.225.2095 and his East Bay District office: 925.602.1880.
Speaker Pelosi has long been an ally and champion in our work for equality and justice, and it is critical that we approach her with that in mind. Democrat George Miller, who represents the East Bay, is chairperson of the Labor and Education Committee. Please call and urge them both to support an ENDA that is fully inclusive, and let them know that you don’t want any member of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community left behind.
Here is sample language which we encourage you to use:
Thank you for your leadership on ENDA and for our community. Our community does not want a bill that leaves out part of our family. Please ONLY move forward a bill that protects everyone in our community, including both transgender people and gender non-conforming lesbian, gay and bisexual people who are discriminated against because of their gender identity and expression. Transgender people, in particular, desperately need the protections ENDA would provide. You are an inspiration and an icon to LGBT people. We need your leadership on this. Thank you for your continued support in the struggle for basic civil rights for all individuals.
