Judge Denies Anti-Gay Group's Attempt To Stop The Issuance Of Marriage Licenses To Same-Sex Couples On An Equal Basis To Different-Sex Couples
(San Francisco, CA, February 13, 2004) — The Prop 22 Legal Defense and Education Fund filed a lawsuit in San Francisco Superior Court seeking to prevent the San Francisco County Clerk from continuing to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples on an equal basis to different-sex couples and to invalidate any licenses that have already been granted.
At the hearing friday afternoon, the San Francisco Superior Judge Warren denied their request.
The San Francisco County Clerk will, therefore, continue to grant marriage licenses to couples without regard to sex or sexual orientation.
Another hearing on the issue has been scheduled for next Tuesday, February 17.
SAN FRANCISCO COUNTY CLERK'S HOURS THIS WEEKEND: Saturday, Feb.14 to Monday, Feb. 16
* MARRIAGE LICENSES WILL BE ISSUED FROM 10 A.M. TO 4 P.M. ON SATURDAY, SUNDAY, AND MONDAY.
In addition, on Thursday, Assemblymember Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), formally introduced the Marriage License Non-Discrimination Act (MLNDA) -- AB 1967. The proposed bill will prohibit discrimination by the State of California in the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
