NCLR Applauds Tlingit and Haida Central Council Resolution

(San Francisco, CA, April 28, 2009)—The National Center for Lesbian Rights applauds Resolution TA/09-44 unanimously passed by the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska. The resolution calls for the tribe members to “offer our support and caring for all two-spirit sons and daughters in every way, as well as all the beloved children of this nation, and wish to open communication and support groups to have better understanding.” During the 74th Annual Tribal Council Assembly in Juneau, the council members acknowledged that many of their two-spirit members, that is, their lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) tribe members were subject to prejudice and violence, and called upon their community to reject this kind of discrimination and embrace each citizen, regardless of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
