Updates on Transgender Military Ban Cases
On May 6th, the Supreme Court allowed Trump’s ban on transgender service members to take effect by granting an emergency stay in United States v Shilling, which greenlights the government’s ability to purge thousands of transgender troops who are serving our country ably and honorably. This has been devastating for transgender service members, who at the stroke of a pen will now have their lives turned upside down. Those affected risk losing their careers, housing, and medical care and face being discharged through a process that stains their military records and will make it difficult to obtain civilian employment. Read our statement on this decision.
While this news is disappointing, NCLR and our partners are still pursuing our challenge to the ban in Talbott v USA. Our Legal Director, Shannon Minter, argued at the DC Circuit Court of Appeals on April 22nd, urging the Court to deny the government’s request for a stay of the trial court’s order blocking the ban. A recording of the hearing is available on the Court’s YouTube channel. We expect a decision will be announced shortly on whether the injunction will be overturned or remain in place. Be sure to follow our social media channels linked at the bottom of this email for the most up to date information.

The First 100 Days: NCLR’s Legal Experts Discussed Trump’s Impact on the LGBTQ Community
So much has happened in our country and communities since Inauguration Day. It’s been hard to keep up with the scale of change and chaos we’ve witnessed, and stunning to realize how much has changed during this time.
As we approached 100 days of this administration, NCLR staff talked through the decisions that have impacted the LGBTQ community.
We covered the executive orders, federal rule changes, proposed congressional legislation, and court rulings from the first 100 days of the Trump administrationthat have made the most impact. A recording from the event is now on our YouTube page and we encourage you to watch and share with others.

Solidarity with Workers: International Workers’ Day
May 1st was the celebration of May Day, or International Workers’ Day. We urged the greater LGBTQ community to take this opportunity to build solidarity with all workers and to support economic justice for all.
When the powers that be seek to drive wedges between us, we must remember that our strength is in our common struggle for safety and liberation. The people united will never be defeated.
