Janine Grgurina (she/her) – Legal Assistant
A UC Santa Cruz alumni, Janine Grgurgina comes to us after running a voter registration campaign and working on behalf of affordable housing. She is interested in advocating for transgender healthcare and reproductive justice and is excited to be working for NCLR because of our positive impact on the LGBTQ community.
Where do you currently reside?
Noe Valley, San Francisco
What is your educational background?
Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Legal Studies from the University of California Santa Cruz
Where did you work before this?
I worked at Seneca Family of Agencies as a visitation counselor for the foster care reunification process. Prior to that I ran a voter registration campaign in Michigan and worked on an affordable housing campaign in SF.
What brought you to NCLR?
I’ve always been interested in politics and have been considering law school. NCLR specifically does work that aligns with my values and I’m really thankful to be working here.
What are you most looking forward to as you start your position?
Learning how to do work in a field I haven’t worked in before, and working for an organization that has such a strong positive impact on the LGBTQ+ community.
What issues are you most passionate about?
I’m passionate about many social justice issues, at the moment I would say I’m most interested in advocating for transgender healthcare and reproductive justice.
Do you have any goals for 2023 personally and/or professionally?
My professional goal for 2023 is to work to positively impact my community and to decide if I would like to apply to law school.
My personal goal outside of work is to learn how to play roller derby and join the Bay Area Roller Derby (I’ve already taken their Learn to Skate program and start their ‘Baddies’ Program next month).
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time outdoors, hiking, watching really bad reality tv, and doing arts and crafts.
Do you have any pets?
My housemate has two cats, their names are Mia and Chonky. Mia is a heathen, Chonky has no brain cells.
