NCLR Applauds U.S. House Passage of Dream and Promise Act, which would put millions of immigrants on a pathway towards citizenship

(Washington, DC)  Today, The U.S. House of Representatives passed a landmark bill that would create a pathway to permanent citizenship for over 2.5 million undocumented immigrants. Seven Republicans in the House joined 230 Democrats in support of the Dream and Promise Act. The Trump Administration has repeatedly targeted immigrants, and President Trump threatened to cancel the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) last year. DACA has helped thousands of undocumented youth, including undocumented LGBTQ immigrants, gain employment, seek higher education without the fear of deportation.

Statement from Senior Policy Counsel Tyrone Hanley:

“The historic passage of the Dream and Promise Act in the House reflects the transformative organizing done and lead by Dreamers, many of whom are LGBTQ. Despite the onslaught of hatred coming from the White House, we know immigrants are beloved members of our communities. Supporting immigrants is a central LGBTQ issue.  We applaud this historic vote, during the first week of Pride Month, and we will not stop until this legislation becomes law.”

NCLR has been working to protect the rights of LGBTQ immigrants for over 25 years, having launched their Asylum & Immigration Project in 1994.
