Statement from National Center for Lesbian Rights Executive Director Kate Kendell on the Passing of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee

(SAN FRANCISCO, December 12, 2017)—San Francisco Mayor Edwin M. Lee, a civil rights lawyer and the first Asian American person elected mayor of San Francisco, died early this morning. National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) Executive Director Kate Kendell issued the following statement in response:

“We are shocked to hear of the untimely death of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee. Mayor Lee was a force for justice—a fierce advocate for immigrant rights, a champion of NCLR and for the San Francisco LGBTQ community.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Mayor Lee and his wife Anita. For me personally, Mayor Lee was a valued partner. His passing is a profound loss to the city of San Francisco.”
