If confirmed, Jenkins would be the first LGBTQ Justice to serve on the highest court in the largest state in United States
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Today, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he has nominated Martin Jenkins to serve on the California Supreme Court to fill the vacancy of Justice Ming W. Chin, who retired from the court last in August. If confirmed for the seat, Jenkins, who is gay, would become the first openly LGTBQ individual to serve on the highest court in the nation’s largest state, as well as the third Black man.
Statement by Imani Rupert Gordon, Executive Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights:
“We are thrilled by Governor Newsom’s appointment of such an outstanding and highly regarded individual to our state supreme court. It is difficult to imagine a more well-qualified individual than Marin Jenkins, who will bring a wealth of experience both as a civil rights litigator and as a federal and state judge to the court. Jenkins’ appointment also sends a powerful message to LGBTQ Black youth, who for the first time in our state’s history will see themselves reflected on the California Supreme Court.”
